Welcome to Spirit Sports

SPIRIT is Mount Zion's kids sports ministry. We run soccer, flag football, basketball, cheer, and t-ball throughout the school year. The whole point is teaching kids the game and letting them play, not ranking teams or stressing about wins.

Every kid plays. Coaches focus on encouragement over competition. Parents cheer for all the kids, not just their own. And at the end of the season, everyone gets a trophy because they showed up and tried something. We believe God gave every child unique abilities, and our job is to help them discover those in a supportive environment. You don't have to be a member of Mount Zion to join.

We welcome families from all over the community who want a different kind of sports experience for their kids.

Four Seasons of Sports

We run four different sports seasons throughout the school year. This allows for your child can try something new or stick with what they love. Each season runs for several weeks with practices and games built into your family's schedule.

Fall Soccer

Learn dribbling, passing, and teamwork on the field. Great for kids who love to run and want to try a fast-paced team sport.

Fall Flag Football

No tackling, just fun. Kids learn throwing, catching, and strategy while staying active and working together.

Winter Basketball & Cheerleading

Basketball focuses on shooting, dribbling, and defense. Cheerleading teaches routines, teamwork, and performance. Both meet in our gym on the same schedule.

Spring T-Ball

Perfect for younger kids or first-time players. They'll learn hitting, catching, and base running in a relaxed, supportive setting.

What your child will experience

Practices come first
Your child will have about four practices before games start. That's where they learn the basics: how to dribble, how to catch, how to run the bases, whatever the sport is. Practices happen on weeknights and Saturday mornings. You pick what works for your schedule when you register.

Then games start on the same schedule
After those first practices, games begin. They're on the same days you already picked: one weeknight and Saturday mornings. We try to stick to your preferred weeknight, but we can't promise every single game will land there.

No benchwarmers, no scoreboards
Your child will rotate through different positions. Everyone gets time on the field or court. We don't keep score, so there's no scoreboard pressure and no "losing team" to feel bad about. The whole focus is on learning and trying.

Parents encourage everyone
We ask parents to cheer for all the kids out there, not just their own team. It changes the vibe. Kids notice when the whole crowd is supportive, and it makes the experience better for everyone.

Season ends with a trophy party
We wrap up each season during our Spirit Sunday celebration at church. Every child gets a trophy. Not for being the best, just for being part of the team.

Volunteer with SPIRIT

We need coaches, referees, umpires, and timekeepers to make each season happen. You don't need to know the sport inside and out. Most of our coaches are parents who learn alongside the kids. We provide training and support, and you'll get a registration discount for your child. It's a great way to stay involved and help the league run smoothly.

Support our Mission

Registration fees cover most of our costs, but not all of them. Donations help us keep fees low, provide scholarships for families who need them, and maintain our equipment and facilities.

If SPIRIT has been good for your family and you want to help other kids experience it, we'd appreciate your support.

Connect beyond SPIRIT

SPIRIT is part of Mount Zion's kids ministry. We also have programs on Wednesdays and Sundays for kids. If you want to see what else we offer, check out MZ Kids.
